What are the different ways to make a difference now?

How effective is research at innovating?

What’s the history of academia, its strengths and faults, and how to change?

I find myself in early 21st century. From my younger perspective, there appears to be two routes: academia and industry.

• The former is going to undergrad -> grad -> PhD -> publish papers until you get a tenure and teach the next gen to do the same.
• Latter is someone who diverges somewhere along that path to work at a company pouring resources to create a new product for consumers and compete in capitalism. e.g. OpenAI, Cradle/Until, Terraform.

This could not have always been the case. When did it start?
